Wow, a total shocker this mornin.....For those of you if you haven't heard , Steve has died from a sting from a stingray while shooting an underwater sequence for a film.It peirced his heart and they say he probably died instantly. I loved Steve's shows from the start even though some people claim he was to fake or too dramatic. His passion was unmatched and my heart goes out to his Dad , Terri and Bindi and his new baby son. They will be devistated... as all who loved and respected him are.... A huge loss..... A very sad day ...no doubt and I feel a great loss as well...... For those of you interested there is an encore presentation of his interview with Larry King back from 2004 on tonight on CNN. Also the discovery channel and Animal planet will be running episodes on his most respected episodes and will have a marathon of his programs , starting tonight , I beleive. I had a huge amount of respect for the man even though I never met him.His passion and emotion for animals especially reptiles was very impressive and the emotion he showed to them . He had a huge empathy for animals and I will greatly miss the work he has done and the programs he has graced.I'm sure his family will carry on his dreams as well as his best friend Wes.Steve Irwin will always be honoured by me........ Totally unbelievable...

It really is a tragedy...We've lost a wonderful animal advocate and conservationist. He introduced SO many people to reptiles, and his enthusiam was contagious.
It's very sad - but I can't say that I'm surprised. I always knew that one day he'd get just a little too close to whatever deadly creature he was dealing with...I was never very comfortable with the risks he took for his show....Oh well, at least he died doing something he loved.
He will be missed!

I'm happy he went fast and while doing something he loved. I'm also kind of happy that it wasn't a reptile that caused his death.
This is very big news, Wes posted on another forum that he has never seen so many news clippings of a death, besides the death of the pope. Last time I looked, there were 1800 on google already, maybe Steve Irwins death will surpass that of the popes in the media.
He is definitely an Icon, and I think easily the most recongized of any environmentalist / animal guy. Also probably the most famous Australian, and it sounds like they may give him a "state funeral" (whatever that is, but it sounds pretty honorable)
Another thing that doesn't get talked about a lot, but he was very well respected as a herpetologist and contributed a lot of papers and work on the science of reptiles.
One of the very few that actually really genuinely loved wild and captive reptiles.

You bring an excellent point up Ryan. This whole ordeal is tragic but of all the animals to do such it was something totally unexpected. If it would of been a reptile , it would of created an even worse reputation for them and would of created many offshots.I mean , you can see how the media already is going off and saying , wow should we fear rays now, and is T.V. going too far and is it just a big competition between the hosts to see who can be the most daring. You can see what the media does, never any good for the most part. Now if he would of died from a snake or croc attack , they would be eventually yippin about the reptile industry and about the people that keep them in captivity. It would definately bring alot of bad attention to people like us that love working with reptiles. So I think even his death he went in an unexpected way , unlike most people thought.Everyone thought he would eventualluy get it by a croc or snake, and by this way he has not fed the hatred and misunderstanding of reptiles. CROCS RULE!!.....

and if you think about it, maybe he had let his guard down somewhat because it was 'only a stingray'? And Thank you Shawn for posting this in this category, instead of the other information forum that I seem to have dibs on new posts! ;D Carol

It is truly a shame to see him gone. Some people are saying this will be this generations JFK or Princess Di. Where were you when you heard that The Crocodile Hunter was dead? I heard it on the news Sunday Night, when it was still unconfirmed.
I'm glad he was doing something he loved when it happened. It would have been much more tragic if it had been a Richie Valens type plane crash or car crash. People will always remember him and I hope the good he did. He is truly an icon in the entertainment and Reptile/zoo industry.

Certainly a loss to the reptile hobby - he did wonders for getting the public involved in and caring about wildlife - especially herps. A real loss - but he went doing what he loved.
