When in doubt for a desert species I always use damp play sand in a big rubbermaid. Cut a hole in the lid and check daily for eggs and dampness. If it is drying out put a layer of sphagnum moss overtop of the sand, I hate mixxing in moss to keep humidity it grows on top anyways. The box hole I would put in the side near the top, you might need a step for her to get into it. if its in the top it lets to much moisture out. For size try about a sweater box I think it is deep enough. The more room the female has to dig the easier it is on her to pick a spot. 12" deep is more than enough to dig. These values are a little extreme you can get it all done with less space and choice but then you limit your girls to second class laying and that is not what we are about.

For my dragons, I use a large Rubbermaid container (Not sure of its exact size, but I think it is the biggest Walmart sells). I fill the container with damp potting soil. The soil is about 18 inches on one half and slops to the bottom of the opposite end.
When my dragons are ready to lay, (signalled excssive digging) I take them out of their cage and put them into this pre-setup container. Of course the container has heat and lighting for the female as well. usually they lay within 1-2 days. In one case my female laid after 15 min. But generally I sneak around her, so she wont see me, every hour or so. She digs like crazy, lays her eggs, and fills the eggs back in. After they are laid, I carefully remove the eggs and put them into an egg box and then into the incubator for 2 months.
Make sure yo feed them like crazy after they lay as they will be about 1/3 lighter than before she become gravid. And lots of calcium!
Good luck!
