I was just wondering if these guys are legal in Saskatchewan. From my understanding, they aren't illegal, but they are really legal either. I just think it would be a great experience working with them. Plus they're number are droping in the wild, so it would be a nice conservation project as well.

I just re-read the rules, and it doesn't specifically prohibit them...But I would check with someone from SERM before I got one, just in case...

I worked with them briefly in Drummheller. They were fun, but don't get bit! I've never heard mice crunch the way they did when the gila's chomped down. Not even the young salties smashed the bones that bad.

I'm pretty sure I noticed Roy Stockwell, don't quote me on this, was selling individuals for $1500. I would love to get a pair, but right now that is really out of my price range. It would definately be a challenge to work with them though.

That's wicked. I didn't think anyone kept them in Canada aside from zoos. That's honestly not a bad price. Does he have beaded lizards?

I'm pretty sure I noticed Roy Stockwell, don't quote me on this, was selling individuals for $1500. I believe that you're thinking of Don Patterson out of BC. He is breeding Reticulated Gila's and has them listed on his website for $1500 CAD each. To the best of my knowledge Roy Stockwell does not work with them. As for the legality of keeping one, if one was to follow the Captive Wildlife Regulations strictly... ...then they ought to be legal. Though they are a venomous species so it's really just a matter of the wording of the law rather then the intent.

My apologies to Don Patterson. At least I got the price right. But ya, they are an amazing species, and I do/will work with them in the future. But as far as the laws go, I think some things will need to change because I'm sure I read on the forums here that they don't allow import permits for them, even though they are legal. Seems like the government loves to play with the goofy wording of these laws. They should just be cut and dry, but they're not. I think it's the same with turtles/tortoises. But anyway, rock on!! Gila Monsters rock. Here is the link from reptilescanada.com www.reptilescanada.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16040
