So im not asking names or WHO has a ball python, i just want to know roughly how many ball pythons are living in Saskatchewan right now. Does anybody have a number? Also, has anybody been caught with one? What were the penalties? Thanx!

I really have no idea how many there are - And I don't want to either!! I'm pretty sure that I'd have to report anyone I found out that had illegal animals - just because by not complying, they are making things bad for the rest of us - in that when they get caught, it paints all reptile keepers as irresponsible and selfish. People get caught fairly regularily - I think there is a fairly hefty fine (amount depends on the "severity" of the infraction), and the animals are confiscated. Kaley

I am in 100% agreeance with Kaley . They are restricted , I know it sucks , but keeping them anyways is not how to get things to change. It totally reflects bad on the reptile keepres of this province that are serious and responsible. I am not implying anything towards you and i do not know how many illegal balls are in the province , but I can guess quite a few, NOT GOOD. There is no doubt that laws will keep getting tighter in the reptile world , so lets just follow the rules for now.

While I'm not condoning keeping balls, or smok'n pot, which I do neither of, but isn't the marijuana issue a little reflective of a similar fight? However their (do I call them hobbyists?) methods are for everyone to use it regardless of the laws. While it is still illegal, they have made progress. I believe it's just a ticket and not a criminal offence if caught with the stuff. Sheer numbers have made this a necessity. However, marijuana growers, er ball python breeders are still attacked as serious criminals. There is obviously a much larger population of grass hobbyists then boid hobbyists, so this is a mute point, but I thought it might be interesting.

That is an interesting analogy, but you did point out the flaw - pot growers have decreased the severity of their "crime" through sheer numbers- you just can't throw everyone in jail for smoking weed - but there will never be enough people here that want to keep boids to convince the government that they can't just prosecute every single case....
Don't get me wrong - I by no means think that keeping illegal animals should be considered a "serious" crime, I just can't condone people doing it here, because I firmly believe that people breaking the rules will only convince the govt to make the exotic animals laws more restrictive, not less...
But it really is an interesting analogy!!

So as i'm still relatively new to all this, but isn't a crocodile or alligator a much greater threat to man than a ball python. No python is going to bite off your arm or leg, and i'm not 100% sure on this, but if a BP wraps up say your arm, wouldn't it be relatively easy to unwrap? Im not sure on the strength of these snakes. Has there been any recorded cases of a BP killing a human?

you're right - crocs are far more dangerous than BPs - BPs really are nearly harmless...They aren't restricted because they're dangerous, they are restricted because the whole boidae family is restricted.

Much easier to just make a "blanket ban" then to spend the proper time & effort to make a set of laws that are practical & only Bans Boids that could pose any real threat. Much easier just to make a law where "All Boids" are illegal which includes everything that could be a threat plain & simple. Watch out for those Killer Anthills or Sand Boas there folks! Mark
