I just changed my snakes water dish, he took a few sips from it, then lined his back-end over top of the dish and began to.... soil the water!!!! My other snakes do this also.
So what triggers the mechanism? Is it the same idea when you put your friends hand in warm water when they fall asleep?

Certainly common for them to use their water dishes and also to soil their tank just after cleaning it - may have to do with marking territory (although they are not supposed to be territorial) - or just making our life difficult. I think they prefer to have familiar scents around but cannot explain why they use their water dish,
