Has anyone ever been to Evolution of Pets in Edmonton, AB? The address is 15105 Stony Plain Rd. It used to be The Koi Shop. Anyway, we were in there yesterday and the conditions of the animals were horrid. The stench was also horrific!! Within 10 minutes Rhonda and I both felt like vomiting at the site and state of the animals and we had to leave. I contacted the Alberta SPCA today and filed a complaint. There were at least 30 or more reptiles, most being housed in enclosures that were way too small. There was absolutely no light or heat in any of the enclosures and none had substrate or even a log for them to sit on. Just a dark, bare enclosure with a reptile in it. Some had a food or water dish but they were completely empty and most didn't even have signs of a food or water dish. There was an iguana with absolutely no tail and another with burns covering one leg. Most were belly and head down in the enclosures looking extremely weak and dehydrated. Some had hind bones protruding from the lack of food and water. Their store mascot, which is a huge iguana, has what looks like the beginnings of mouth rot. They are also illegally housing a black prairie dog and I will contact our local fish and wildlife department about that today. There was a full grown dog in a cage that he could barely turn around in and the chinchilla cage was soiled so bad that the bedding was discolored and wet and the stench was unbearable. They have a pet Blue and Gold Macaw in the back who has been plucked for a few years and we were glad to see he had grown some feathers back. BUT, he is very small for his age, is housed in a cage that a small parrot should be housed in and he was continually pacing inside the cage. There were also full sized tarantulas being housed in containers no bigger than 4 inches wide by 6 inches long. There are also four adult savanna monitors housed in one enclosure. I personally wouldn't keep one in a cage that size let alone four! Again, we felt so sick at what we saw that it bothered us for the rest of the day. I will do all I can to make sure that this changes in this pet store, even if I have to contact the SPCA and file a report each time until something is done. This is the same pet store where one of our beared dragons came from. He had his tail bit off when he arrived and he has metabolic bone disease. If anyone get's a chance to go to the city, please visit this store and if you see anything wrong report it to the AB SPCA. This place needs to clean up their act!
