I recently took a quick trip down to Wisconsin to see my wife and family. The weather was supposed to be cool so I had hoped to maybe catch a glimpse of a few salamanders. I left my snorkeling gear at home cuz of the weather. The weather was 80F the whole 5 days so I regreted that decision.
It was a family packed trip, so unfortunately if herps were the primary focus, so to would be a divorce lawyer. (Our 6th anniversery was on the trip). But, when everyone was going to sleep, I ran out with a flashlight. Darkness was pretty nipply, but this American toad was out bufo americanus.
This toad has an ant stuck to it's foot by the stinger... ouch. You could tell it hurt when I pulled it out for him.
The next day, our family went out to a petting zoo out in touristland. They had a bunch of bigass sulcata's roaming the grounds, and a pool of full grown snappers which were cool. Out in the parking lot, a slow moving river was close by. I spotted this out on a lily pad.
To my wife's disdain and my in-laws appall, I jumped in and grabbed this tiny feller. Woohoo, a beauty!
See, I can be a family man. This is Tony having fun too.
After some mushy romantic stuff the wife insisted on (eh, the dinner was mouth watering). I spent our horse ride looking into the trees for black rat snakes. Lucky for the guide, I didn't find any.
The next day I showed Tony how to catch frogs. It was a blast. Here's some finds.
Leopard frog... super fun to find since they are so rare here in Alberta. Here's a brown version.
Aaaand, a massive bullfrog that surprised the sh?t out of me.
Lastly, the highlight of the trip, the last species I thought I'd ever find, the spiny soft shell turtle! Apalone spinifera
It was a blast, and somewhere I don't mind having family to visit.
