In Alberta we have wandering gartersnakes, Thamnophis elegans vagrans, plains gartersnakes, Thamnophis radix haydeni and red-sided gartersnakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis. The wandering gartersnakes are the most common ones I've seen around Drumheller and southern Alberta, but I have found a few plains as well. The snakes in the pics above are T. s. parietalis, I'm pretty sure, which is the same ssp. found in Manitoba. The range of this snake extends into the Northwest Territories and I think it is the most northern-ranging snake in North America. Alberta and Sask. both share the same 3 species of gartersnake. According to a range map I have (published in the 1960's or so) the plains gartersnake ranges to just north of S'toon however I caught many of them in and around P.A when I was a little kid. Those are great pictures, Ian. Is that den around Edmonton? I found a gartersnake den around Drum last year, but there was only about a dozen snakes - both wandering and plains.

ya, it was late at night, it's Thamnophis s. parietalis.... is was just more excited about finally having a camera to share stuff like this. The den is about 20 minutes west of Edmonton; and has a few hundred snakes. The plains and wandering garters do approach the Edmonton area, but only the red-sided is found within.
