So I looked thru the forums and cannot find anything on fire belly toads....if they are hiding somewhere pls let me know. Otherwise, I figured I would start one.
FBTs are becoming very common, in Regina, I think just about every petstore has some. I currently have 3 adult males (i think they are males anyway). They have very unique personalities and are a very low-maintenance pet when it comes to exotics. I've had mine for about 3 months now. They are in very good health but I noticed that they are all fairly picky eaters. I've tried supers, mealworms and crickets. They seem to eat them for a while (a week or two) and then become tired of them. They also rarely seem hungry. I'm not sure why this is, and can't find much help online on other forums and websites. I'm going to try increasing the temp in the tank and see if that helps. Has anyone else had similar issues with FBTs?
Please feel free to discuss anything fire-belly-toad here.

I have a heat lamp on in their cage all day now and have been using it for about 2 weeks...I haven't noticed much of a change in eating habits....
Another subject about fire belly toads which has been on my mind lately is substrate choice. I've tried cocohusk/cocobark and hated it passionately (made a huge mess in my viv and stuck to my toads). I'm currently using a layered substrate mix of rocks at the bottom, a container full of organic sphagnum peat moss in the middle and exo terra forest moss on the top over everything and creating a ramp into the water. I have mixed feelings about this moss....I would prefer a live-type of moss that actually grows...which i thought this was but apparently is not. The moss looks dead. I provide UV lighting (a bulb not the sun), and daily misting. Does anyone have a specific type of LIVE moss they really like? Or a different substrate that works well in a half water, half land viv. Thanks.
