There is no reptile store in Saskatoon. I don`t know about anywhere else. I am not sure that it would be beneficial to open a reptile store in Saskatoon.

Non here in Regina either, there are a few stores that carry fish and reptiles. I honestly don't think you could turn much of a profit with a reptile store here. Not to mention with our laws on boids.

yea the laws on pythons and boa's really would make it hard however i talked to a lady named penny on the phone yesterday and she says that the laws are being reconfigured at the moment and she says it is possible to have ball pythons legal with in a year or so as well as other python and boa's she did not think that red tail boa's will be on that list tho

Penny Lalonde?
Did she say why the laws are being changed or when this is to come about?

I really wanted a red tailed boa too!!! Oh darn, well hey anything is a step in the right direction. I still don't think that with the smaller populations of Regina and Stoon we could handle a reptile only store.

Hello Cindy,
I did mention our Ministry is planning a review and rewrite of our Captive Wildlife Regulations sometime in the near future. When this will take place is yet to be determined.
I am sure that all species including all exotics will be looked at. I do not think that boas will be a species they will allow, the smaller ball pythons may be a possibility. Then again I cannot make any promises that it will change. At the present time there is no information to pass on.
Thank you
Penny Lalonde

Argh, I don't see why they just don't take a look at the laws of BC and Alberta and Manitoba and do something like that. It really bothers me.

ya the laws are a little silly maybe enough to move back to Manitoba how strongly enforced are these laws

Penny won`t answer you here - LOL - That was an email she sent me.
As far as the laws being enforced - I can tell you that if you are caught with an illegal snake in this province you will face up to a $5000.00 fine and possibly up to an additional $5000.00 for illegally importing it into the province. (Not to mention the damaging effect it could have towards the club and future proposals to the Ministry on Boids if the laws don`t change at all after this review)
Believe me, I don`t like the rules either, but after 10 years in the industry I have seen what other provinces had to go through almost losing all exotic rights. I follow the rules because I really do enjoy what I am allowed to keep. I would hate it if I lost that too...

Is it possible to sit in and have official representation at this review meeting? I find in Alberta it's not hard to attend these sorts of things, you just have to ask. You would have more clout if HISS was a more official club, with a member's list, meetings, by-laws, Not for Profit status etc. That probably just isn't feasable at this time, but something to think about. I would suggest having a Saskatoon and Regina chapter, with the one show being a joint venture. Even if meetings start out with three people meeting in a basement, it'll grow.
Tangent aside, as per herps, create a list of species that you would like to see legalized. I suggest including red tailed boas, ball pythons, kenyan and rosy boas. Include a conclusive arguement as to the benefits of these animals (as a herp industry), and how they have not caused problems in places were they are legal. Alternatively, copy the list of herps from Alberta; edit as you see fit, and show why these are illegal, and showing the animals not on that list are not in the same risk catagory.
I think in such a meeting, it's important to come across as more than just a concerned pet owner to be taken seriously.
Anyhow, that's my two bit rambling; I hope it gives you some ideas to feed off of.
